High-pressured job? Deadlines and targets getting on top of you and keeping you awake at night? Are people always telling you to relax and you just find it terribly unhelpful- it's easier said than done right?

But maybe they're onto something, yes, yes, I know it's hard to switch off, but what if we took on-board their advice and actually tried to relax - not by changing our state-of-mind but by implementing changes in our daily routine? Considering that nearly 45% of workers know someone who has quit their job from stress maybe it's worthwhile trying to relax...

Take a break

OK so your schedule is insane- but you're entitled to a break. Don't sit at your desk at lunch time; instead take a ten minute walk- if you work near somewhere green this is most likely to boost endorphins. If the weather is no good go and socialise with your colleagues away from your work station (most companies have some kind of break-out area or canteen so utilise it). Do anything that takes your mind off your huge lists of tasks!

Make room for a plant

Create a relaxing environment simply by popping a plant on your desk. Plants are proven to relieve stress levels- for example Dutch researchers reported lower stress levels of patients that had plants in the same room as them than patients who didn't. Bamboo plants, peace Lilies and English Ivy are said to be best for purifying the air.

You've heard the phrase that laughter is the best medicine- so why not take heed? A laugh is the fastest way of bringing your mind and body back into balance- it relieves stress and physical tension and relaxes your muscles for up to 45 minutes afterwards.

Exchange anti-dotes with your colleagues, watch some comedy on your break or listen to a comedy show or podcast whilst you work.

Listen to music you love

Listening to music you love can take your mind off how stressed you really are and it decreases levels of cortisol (the stress hormone) in your body, which counteracts the effects of chronic stress. So put some headphones on and get in the zone- you'll smash your workload with a smile.

Invest in some home office comforts

There are many tools out there to relieve stress; no longer do we just have stress balls on offer. Perhaps consider a foot rest like THIS ONE which has massage bumps to relieve stress and rejuvenate tired feet or THIS heated back support designed to reduce tension from poor posture.
